Lamia
Extension and RenovationThe project area is situated in the Ostuni countryside, on farmland cultivated with olive groves. Individual adjacent plots of different sizes are separated exclusively by dry-stone walls containing traditional Apulian structures. The project intends to create a diffuse house by expanding a lamia, a very basic rural building traditionally used as an agricultural warehouse. The land extends longitudinally to the west and is entirely planted with olive trees, forming a regular grid all along the lamia and the borders of the plot. The extension, divided into three distinct elements, originates from the lamia following the geometry of the original structure and of the natural environment. The new volume to the south, parallel to the swimming pool, defines an open courtyard towards the long side of the ground. An inhabited wall protects the structure towards the access road and connects the two main spaces, providing privacy for the courtyard. This way, the pre-existing building becomes the first visible area of the house, a starting point to discover the garden and enter the new structure, which is made up of a series of minimal connecting spaces of different sizes, characterised by the geometry of barrel vaults. The vault is indeed the element that creates and defines spaces, turning into a wall, a niche, a ceiling. A great freedom of movement inside matches the extreme flexibility of the spaces that, in continuity with the lamia, can perform different functions over time.
