The transformation strategy aims to preserve the citadel-like condition of the former Slaughterhouse. The new building for university housing is conceived, on an urban and architectural scale, as an extension of the University of Lugano following the geometry imposed by the preexistence. The volume fits into the plot of the complex and opens toward the Cassarate River. On the ground floor, the atrium is treated as one of the historic renewed galleries , with the restaurant and classrooms on either side; on the upper floors, the two housing units, each with 8 apartments, are arranged in vis-à-vis. The community is represented through circulation spaces, affirming its collective character. The arrangement adopted allows each apartment to provide identical qualities. Unlike living next to each other or on top of each other, living in vis-à-vis creates a special sense of community.
